Based in Toronto, Canada, AMOT is a group/collective focused on exploring the meeting points between disciplines and cultures, and imagining new musical forms to reflect the aesthetics and multiculturalism of the Canadian identity with an emphasis on improvisation and individuality.
With nods to hugely influential improvising ensembles such as the Art Ensemble of Chicago and the Australian Art Orchestra, the AMOT Orchestra thrives on Canada’s cultural and aesthetic makeup - one that is uniquely pluralistic and requires initiatives that reflect and support its artistic composite. Rather than assimilating non-Western traditions into jazz or contemporary idioms, this project seeks to build new frameworks from the ground up, advocating for mutualism in large ensemble settings and contributing tools for equitable musical exchange.
